SDCC Begins and I think it Party Time in the USA!!!

Well you folks know me already and where I am going to start this blog so....

    WOMENS WORLD CUP

Well I certainly didn't see that blitzkrieg coming and neither did any of the analysts. All the to the US Ladies for backing up what they have said they were going to do all tournament long. Redemption. Change the Script. She Believes. We thought it was all catch phrases until they put 4 goals on Japan before Japanese ever had time to regroup. 5-2 when it was all said and done. Take a bow ladies! You earned the cup in style.

Speaking of in style, all the props in the world to Carli Lloyd for one of the best championship performances I have seen in ANY sport. A hat trick in under 20 minutes... in Futbol is quite an accomplishment. It is unthinkable for that to happen in a Cup Final. And a record audience saw exactly that.

To Americans Rampone, Wambach and Boxx and the Japanese wunderkind Sawa, who'll probably never play in another World Cup match again. THANK YOU. It was a pleasure to see you ladies play hard and define athleticism and national pride over the last 16-20 years. Good Luck with whatever life has planned for you next.

    NASCAR

Well it took a long time with that rain delay but congrats to Dale Earnhardt JR. on winning at Daytona Early Monday Morning. Yep you read that right as the race didn't actually end until around 3am.

Unfortunately, not many will remember this race for that because on the final lap, Austin Dillon got tapped and went airborne right into the catch fence. Car disintegrated. Demolition derby followed but Dillon walked away unscathed.

Matter of fact, a lot of fan favorite drivers had their rides totaled during the race and there are more than a few that might have seen their Chase hopes crushed. Kyle Busch can't catch a break... and neither can Danica Patrick...

    NBA

All the props in the world to David West for eschewing the money and joining the Spurs for that chance at a ring. I have heard analysts rip him for the decision but he still has time to make up money. West is chasing that ring Baby!

Should I stay or should I go? If I go there will be trouble...and if I stay it will be doubled. NBA Fans let me know...Should I stay or should I go? - DeAndre Jordan. I needed someone with a webcam around Mark Cuban when he heard news of Jordan's backtracking...

Everyone focusing on Wade, LeBron, and Paul on the banana boat. I still was focusing on what a hottie Gabrielle Union still is....

    MLB

Losing Alex Gordon for 8 weeks may be a giant pothole for the Royals to get through...

Bigger Disappointment this season: Seattle or San Diego?

I dunno what the second half of the season entails but I know I will be keeping an eye on the Indians and Reds to start making a run or deal half their teams...

    WIMBLEDON

Nick Kyrgios is definitely a personality on the court but intentionally giving away points? Even in frustration, that'll make fans, players. and commentators mad at you in a hurry for reducing the game into joke fodder....

Serena vs Venus....Much more interesting than Serena vs Maria Sharapova. God Maria got her booty kicked! Venus is on the downside and had much more fight than Sharapova...

Can Roger Federer do this again? He's holding up his end while a lot of the top 16 have fallen by the wayside...

    MISC

We can try to spin it all we want. UFC can spin it all they want. Mendes replacing Jose Aldo this Saturday vs Conor McGregor is a disappointment. I was hyped to see McGregor vs Aldo.

Gold Cup begins and let's see what the USA got....and I'll be rooting for Trinidad and Tobago to get to the knockout phase....
Seriously Jason Pierre-Paul, did you do any thinking at all????

SPORTS SWITCH OFF AFRONERD SWITCH ON

Well, last week I hit you with Marvel, DC, and Image news.... Since San Diego Comic-Con begun Thursday, let's see other news around the Comics World...

-Dark Horse saw what Image Comics did and has shot back with getting Paul Tobin, Joelle Jones, Rafael Albuquerque, Gene Ha, and Cullen Bunn to open up comic con. Ha's Mae project is what I am looking forward to because it sounds like Twin Peaks meets Rachel Rising.

-Wesley Snipes and Marvel talking? Let the wild Blade speculation BEGIN!

-Grant Morrison just put Graphic India on the Comics Map just by association. And bonus news, he's taking over Heavy Metal Magazine. Get ready for a new level of crazy imagination folks!

    - I don't know what it says about the cinematic Justice League when Jada Pinkett Smith says she wants to play Vixen...in SUICIDE SQUAD 2...! I think a lot of old school DC Fans just went "What The...?"

-I'm getting more Pacific Rim comics this Fall!!!! *Victory Dance!"

-IDW. CAPCOM. Street Fighter/GI Joe crossover. 2016. Now you know and knowing is HADOUKEN!!!!! PLUS IDW seeing what Marvel has done with the Star Wars franchise is ramping up its Star Trek roster including a Starfleet Academy book. But just talking about this leads me into this week's books starting with:

Star Trek/Green Lantern #1: The Enterprise 2.0 (Yes it is the retooled universe) stumbles across a dead world then a dead character surrounded by different colored rings. Cue an ambush by a familiar foe and the rings go nuts and here...we...go... Good setup for a first issue, let me see what chaos ensues....

Bloodshot Reborn #4: Bloodshot takes a step too far here...and unfortunately the creative staff does also by the very last word blurb. I didn't need to know that much. I wanted to be surprised. But let's see what Jeff Lemire got planned. He doesn't make mistakes...unless it furthers an agenda OR a diabolical plan!

Runaways #2Secret Wars 2099 #3, and Spider-Verse #3 just happened. Nothing wowed me but I am expecting a payoff to some of the setups in these issues. Although I have to say as a fan of the recent SpideyVerse storyline, I wondered how the Web was going to be worked in...

Earth 2 Society #2: Pretty much how I figured this was going to go already but also explained a deus ex machina that keeps Kara and Val-Zod in check. A PRETTY BIG deus ex machina.....

Master of Kung Fu #3: Making the most of these mashed up Marvel Universes and still it is fun as all hell. Needs more Black Panther though.... Yes that was a personal bias but it doesn't keep me from loving the heck out of this book!

Age of Apocalypse #1: Feels like Fabian Nicienza never left this universe and the introduction of Doc Nemesis is inspired. Now I don't know about Cypher being our eyes in this universe but again this is a wait and see....

I told you folks to keep Squadron Sinister on your radar and #2 just upped the stakes with no less than 5 familiar universes being given time to shine. Death of a Thor. Backstabbing. And plans upon plans upon domination. All the while, Nighthawk got a plan...

Spidey's Renew Your Vows #2 would have won this week in my eyes just for the introduction of Power Pack AND using the Parker ingenuity to help keep the family's life normal (you know that darn Parker Luck though!) if not for that dang Mark Waid!!!

Archie #1: "Lipstick Incident" aside, this was almost a seamless updating of the Archie mythos into today's sensibilities. Mark Waid and Fiona Staples absolutely nail the feel and appeal of the characters of Riverdale and it is almost a consensus that Jughead has ALREADY stolen the book from the titular character. And we have a bunch more characters just waiting to be introduced including the third part of the triangle, a diner owner, the football star, etc. This is going to be a gift that keeps giving...

Now for the book that I really like and it seems I am the only one on the island, Strange Fruit #1. I thought Mark Waid and artist JG Jones handled the setup well along with the complicated 1920's nuances of the town of Chatterlee, Mississippi well. Anyone that knows history, knows what is going down during this time, with the Jim Crow laws and Ku Klux Klan in full effect. The tricky thing for me here before reading this was going to be how Waid was going to introduce the Superman Mythos into this melting pot and he does it towards the end of issue 1. Jones has his best art rendering in years and everything feels vibrant here. Great setup now let's see them stick the landing...

For an eloquent, opposing opinion on Strange Fruit #1, check out

for J.A. Micheline's analysis. I really can't fight any of the solid points made about Strange Fruit except that I trust Mark Waid as a writer and no one knows the Superman Mythos like he does. We'll see if he can avoid the stereotype/trope potholes that race brings with is. Let me rephrase: I HOPE HE CAN...lol

Brain Cooked. Fun had. And I still have to pick up Civil War #1, Spider Island #1, and Star Wars Lando #1 while watching Wimbledon and Gold Cup action! *SIGH* This is my life....

Thanks For Reading! Until Next Time, I'll See You in the Stands, Fantasizing!
