AfroNerd Book Reviews To Start 2016
Book Reviews over the past 2 weeks are gonna help me get through my hangover.
Happy New Year All!
The Second Team tries to accomplish what the first team got massacred attempting in Voltron From The Ashes #4 by Cullen Bunn and Blacky Shepherd: retrieving the Lions and reviving Voltron. However, conflicts within a member might just hinder that plan...
James Bond Vargr #3 by Warren Ellis and James Masters sees our favorite secret agent just go on a revenge for information spree that leaves a lot of folks dead. So much so, you can expect a response from the baddies and boy, do we get one.
You remember that whole "Nexus Being" shtick that was attached to Scarlet Witch long ago? Well guess who's the new one in Howard The Duck #3 by Chip Zdarsky and Joe Quinones. A lot of cosmic guest stars show up and as usual, Howard is in way over his head!Meanwhile, in the 2nd story by Christopher Hastings and Danilo Beyruth, Gwenpool and Howard hit the Hydra facility and once again Howard proves his intellect in figuring a way out of this mess. Just I wouldn't recommend doing it...can you say dead duck?
Speaking of figuring a way out of a mess, Hacktivist #6 by Alyssa Milano, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Marcus To has our antiheroes in the midst of chaos, deciding that the way to stop Save_Yourself is to tell the world the COMPLETE truth. Wait...What? Yeahhhhh this is not gonna to end well...
Checklist for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #2 by Amy Reeder, Brandon Montclare, and Natacha Bustos: out of control T-Rex in a major city? Check. Strange primates causing trouble? Check. A Kree Omni-Wave projector stuck in your possession? Check. Yeah, Lunella might be in a bunch of trouble here...
Ninjas stealing technology under your watch. Weird animal sightings throughout the town. Batman's life just got complicated in Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 by James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams III. Now who are these creatures breathing on his Batmobile???
Are their individual goals/thoughts really a gelling influence for a team in Squadron Supreme #2 by James Robinson and Leonard Kirk. The whole team has their own motivations but at moment, one member is doing work, one is trying to find himself. Others are trying to find places to belong and Robinson shows that he has read the JMS run in regards to one character...
A personal favorite character makes a guest appearance in Venture #4 by Jay Faeber and Jamal Igle and she shows that she still filled with vigor. Meanwhile, Reggie has to make some big decisions on the Joe story and it is a villain who might hold the key???
Two cosmic beings walk into a bar in Drax #2 by CM Punk, Cullen Bunn, and Scott Hepburn as Terrax and Drax bond over drinks. Yep you read that right. And things only get weirder as all Drax wants is to repair his ship and continue his hunt....
A Mea Culpa here as I will praise Dreaming Eagles #1 by Garth Ennis and Simon Coleby as he takes a narrative track to the Tuskegee Airmen that I haven't seen done well since The Boondocks. I was afraid his using of over-the-top violence a la Tarantino would obscure the story. I am glad to say he proved me wrong and let's see this journey over the next 5 issues.
A visit to a Royal Planet happens in Darth Vader Annual #1 by Kieron Gillen and Leinil Yu with treachery and grandstanding abound. Obviously this planet didn't hear about the last planet that tried to F with Vader. Throw in Triple-Zero and BT up to their usual mayhem and yeah, there's going to be trouble...
Picked up Guardians of the Galaxy Complete Collection Volume #3 by Jim Valentino, Arnold Drake, Michael Gallagher, Mark Texeira, Herb Trimpe, JJ Birch, Steve Carr, Deryl Shelton, Matthew Jorgensen and Gene Colan which completes his 90's run with the original team. Featured within are the returns of Rancor and her Lieutenants, Firelord, Silver Surfer, Galactus, and a 20th Century trip that lands the team into Attilian during one of Marvel's maddening crossovers, Infinity War. Not to mention, the birth of the Galactic Guardians. A lot here to process but I had fun reliving it...except for Infinty War. Should have never been a company wide crossover..lol
The Kemuirkage are stepping up their agenda and Fire Lord Zuko has a lot to deal with in Avatar The Last Airbender Smoke and Shadow Part 2 by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru. The Avatar figures out an important piece to the puzzle but through all of that, it is Mai's new boyfriend that steals the show out from our major player. And I am still wondering why Zuko Mom's hands are always cold to her step-daughter? What do you mean I have to wait until March for the conclusion? Rats...
Some gems here I wholeheartedly recommend folks but I am glad that you followed my insane book review journey (once again). I hope you had full on fun New Year's Eve/Day and that it brings happiness and success to y'all!
Until Next Time, Keep Fantasizing!
